(Everything Is) Not What It Seems

“(Everything Is) Not What It Seems” reflects upon the
ability to look beyond the immediately visible and beyond the given reality of
things. Artworks in this exhibition have been selected because of their ability
to fascinate and deceive, and to shed a light on a multitude of historical,
technological and socio-political issues. A shared trait among the
participating artists is how they use the potential in visual art to add layers
of meaning to different topics, inviting us as viewers to further reflection.
The works in the exhibition can also be perceived as tools for the emancipation
from visual strategies and political ideologies utilized to trade with our
culture and art. As a whole, the exhibition points out that artistic
imagination can be considered as a site of resistance, as a means that contains
the potential to challenge our beliefs and awaken the sense that it is possible
to imagine other forms of reality. The exhibition is curated by Mara Ambrožič
Verderber, director of Piran Coastal Galleries, and presents works by 21
artists active in the national and international art context.
