Language
The official languages in Portorož and Piran are Slovene and Italian, but you will also easily communicate in English, especially with the younger population. In tourist centers and hospitality venues, efforts are made to communicate in other European languages (German, Croatian, …), although the level of proficiency can vary significantly.
Money
The official currency in Slovenia is EURO (€). Prices are listed everywhere with tax included (unless stated otherwise). Tipping is not mandatory, but the unwritten rule is to round up the final bill by approximately 10% when served.
Tolls
To drive on all Slovenian motorways and some expressways, motorcycles, passenger cars, and vans with a maximum permitted weight not exceeding 3.5 tons must be equipped with a vignette. You can buy it at all gas stations in Slovenia and neighboring countries, at post offices, and some kiosks. Fines for driving without a vignette are high and range from €300 to €800. You can buy a weekly, monthly, half-yearly, or yearly vignette. Read more about the vignette and where it is required here.
Internet
Internet access is very good in cities and larger towns, where it is available either through a mobile connection or WiFi in hospitality venues and accommodations. In more remote areas with a more dispersed population, you may encounter weaker signals and possible connection interruptions.

Before calling home/abroad, check that you have entered either “00” or “+” before the phone number, followed by the two- or three-digit country code.

Holidays

Drinking water
Tap water is universally drinkable and of excellent taste. Even during the hottest months, there is no reason for dehydration to ruin your long-awaited seaside vacation. Avoid drinking water in places where it is clearly marked as not safe for drinking.
Safety
Portorož and Piran are considered very safe towns with a low crime rate and safe access to the sea.
Pets
Many accommodations and other facilities welcome visits from your furry little friends. If you are traveling from abroad, your pet must also have a valid passport when entering the country.
Smoking
Smoking is strictly prohibited in enclosed public spaces. This includes hotels, bars, restaurants, and all other covered facilities. Ask about special accommodations for smokers and designated smoking areas in hospitality venues.
The purchase of tobacco and tobacco products is permitted only for persons over the age of 18.
Alcohol
Alcoholic beverages can be purchased in hospitality venues as well as in grocery and specialized stores. According to the legislation of the Republic of Slovenia, the sale of alcoholic drinks is prohibited to persons under the age of 18. There are also certain time restrictions on sales – between 9:00 PM and 7:00 AM in stores, and from opening time until 10:00 AM in hospitality venues.
Weather
With a warm Mediterranean climate and a large number of sunny days, Portorož and Piran are a very pleasant destination for a getaway in all seasons. A pleasantly warm summer is followed by a mild winter, with temperatures rarely dropping below zero and low precipitation (between 1,000 and 1,100 mm annually). Check the current weather forecast.
