Church of St Peter
Church, Piran
The Church of St. Peter, built in 1272, is one of the oldest churches in Piran. It was reportedly founded from the legacy of Bona, widow of Giovanni de Vitalis, and stood outside the medieval walls near the old harbor—even before the Venetian civic palace was built. It was restored in 1818, with the Neoclassical façade designed by architect Pietro Nobile. Above the entrance is a stone relief of Jesus handing the keys to St. Peter, by Antonio Bose.
The interior features a rare secco wall painting with floral decoration from the late 19th century, attributed to Ignazio Calassi. Beneath it are earlier frescoes. The Baroque altar, likely brought from Venice, includes a marble tabernacle (17th/18th century). The altar niche holds a painting of the Immaculate with St. Agnes, topped by a gilded canopy with angels, flanked by wooden statues of St. Peter and St. Paul.
Access to the church is restricted.
