Court Palace

Cultural heritage

The Courthouse in Piran is one of the central buildings on Tartini Square, representing the role of law and public administration in the historic town center.

It was built in 1879 as a district court, on the site where the loggia, once a key public meeting space, had stood. The building is designed in the Neo-Renaissance style, typical of the Habsburg period, when state authority was often expressed through architecture.

A notable feature is the symmetrical stone façade, structured with classical elements and arched windows on the ground floor. The building has three floors and an interior adapted to administrative functions. For many years, it housed various judicial bodies.

The courthouse still serves its original function, maintaining a link between historical legal traditions and modern civic life. It remains a key element in the urban design of Piran, connecting governance, culture, and history.

Visitors can expect insights into the historical role of justice, 19th-century architecture, and the importance of public institutions in shaping city life.
