Fountain – a memorial to the fallen sailors

Historic monument

The Monument to the Fallen Sailors 1941–1945 is located in the center of Portorož, at Trg prekomorskih brigad, between the Lucija–Portorož–Piran road and the harbor. It was erected in 1977 to commemorate the fallen soldiers of the Overseas Brigades of the National Liberation Army of Yugoslavia (NOVJ). The monument was designed by sculptor Janez Lenassi.

The central feature is a fountain with a water jet, symbolizing a compass, with cardinal directions marked. It includes names of places associated with the history of Slovenian overseas fighters. Adjacent to the fountain are a stone block with a dedication, a speaker’s podium, and flag holders.

The monument is listed in the Register of Cultural Heritage of Slovenia.
