Minorite Monastery of St Francis and the Cloister
Religious heritage
The Franciscan Monastery of St. Francis of Assisi in Piran is one of the most significant cultural and spiritual landmarks on the Slovenian coast. It is located on Bolniška Street, near the historic town center.
Founded before 1301, the monastery was originally built in Gothic style and was renovated and expanded during the 17th and 18th centuries. A key feature is the cloister, completed in 1735, known for its excellent acoustics, now used as a venue for classical music concerts, including the Tartini Festival and the Piran Music Evenings.
The complex includes the Church of St. Francis, monastic quarters, and a library with rare manuscripts, including 15th-century musical works. The site preserves valuable art heritage, especially Venetian paintings. Its most notable piece is the altarpiece “Madonna Enthroned with the Child and Six Saints” by Vittore Carpaccio, painted in 1518.
After nationalization in 1954, the monastery was returned to the Minorite Order in 1996. Today, it once again serves as a spiritual center, offering pastoral care, prayer, and retreats.
Visitors can expect a peaceful atmosphere, a strong cultural-historical presence, and insight into the religious tradition that shaped the town for centuries. The monastery is open to the public during concerts and cultural events.
