Moon Bay or the Bay of the Cross
Moon Bay is a natural pebble beach located within the Strunjan Nature Reserve, beneath an 80-meter-high flysch cliff. The bay is known for its clear waters and underwater meadows, which are important for biodiversity.
Access is only possible on foot; suitable footwear is recommended. The trail passes by the Strunjan Cross, offering views of the Gulf of Trieste. The beach lacks infrastructure, making it ideal for visitors seeking tranquility and a connection with nature.
Visitor Notice:
Parts of the cliff in Moon Bay are naturally more fragile due to their geological structure, and occasional rockfalls can occur. Last year, we recorded a few smaller and one larger rockfall, so we monitor the area regularly. For a safer visit, we recommend checking the hazard map and avoiding the sections marked in red and orange, which indicate higher risk areas. It’s safer to stay under more vegetated and gently sloping areas, rather than under bare, steep cliffs. If you notice small stones rolling down, it may be a sign that the slope is unstable. When choosing a spot to relax or swim, please also consider the condition of the cliff above you, not just the appearance of the beach. You can find more information on the map.
