Museum of Salt Making
Museum
The Museum of Salt-Making is located in the heart of the Sečovlje Salina Nature Park, within the restored complex of Fontanigge, near the Dragonja River. It is accessible on foot or by bike from the direction of Camp Lucija.
This is an open-air ethnological collection that presents the traditional salt-making process, preserved in the northern Adriatic region. Visitors can see restored saltworkers’ houses, wooden basins, manual tools, and historic transport paths. In the first saltworks house, now the visitor center, the ground floor was a salt warehouse, and the upper floor was living quarters for the saltworker family.
The museum reveals the life and work of salt-workers, their knowledge, and their relationship with the natural environment. Its special setting offers an opportunity to observe salt-tolerant plants, birdlife, and active salt pans.
The visit is suitable for families, school groups, individuals, and those interested in natural and cultural heritage. It can be combined with a walk through the park, birdwatching, or a guided explanation of salt production.
Opening hours are seasonal. The museum is open from April 1 to October 31 and closed during the winter. Group visits are possible by appointment.
Comfortable footwear is recommended. Admission includes access to the museum and saltpan area.
