Our Lady of Health Church
Church, Piran
Originally dedicated to St. Clement, the patron saint of sailors, the church was rededicated in 1632 to Our Lady of Health in response to plague epidemics. It features a stunning Baroque interior, including a stucco ceiling with a central motif of Charity (Caritas). There are three Carrara marble altars, crafted by Gasparo Albertini, with the main altar (1779) showing a relief of the Presentation of Mary, and paintings by Matteo Furlanetto among many votive offerings.
Renovated several times, the most significant transformation occurred between 1773–1778, led by architect Zuanna Dongetti. The rear façade opens into a grand rotunda from 1506, and the Neo-Gothic bell tower (mid-19th century) was precisely sized by Austrian military standards. The complex served both religious and defensive purposes. The richly decorated ceiling was restored in 2017, and conservation work continues.
Access to the church is restricted.
