St. George’s Parish Museum

Museum

St. George’s Parish Museum was founded in 2000 on the initiative of the Piran parish and preserves valuable treasures of church art and history. In the ground floor of the sacristy are exhibited liturgical objects and precious equipment, while in the archaeological crypt beneath the church one can see remains of Roman buildings, early medieval walls and traces of Romanesque and Gothic architecture. In the basement lapidarium are gathered stone elements from different periods, among the most remarkable being a wooden model of the old Gothic church of St. George.

The church itself has a long and rich history. Settlement at this site can be traced back to Roman times, while a later Romanesque basilica was rebuilt in the Gothic style and consecrated in 1344. In the 17th century the church acquired its present Baroque appearance, and the museum today offers insight into all layers of its architectural and artistic past.
