Tartini square

Square

Tartini Square is the main town square of Piran, named after violinist and composer Giuseppe Tartini, who was born here in 1692. The area was once an inner harbor (mandrač), filled in in 1894 for sanitary reasons and to create public space.

In 1896, a bronze statue of Tartini by Venetian sculptor Antonio dal Zotto was installed. The square is surrounded by historic buildings, most notably the 15th-century Gothic palace Benečanka.

The current layout dates to 1992, when architect Boris Podrecca redesigned the square. He preserved the elliptical shape of the old harbor and paved it with white Istrian stone.

Today, Tartini Square is a popular meeting place for locals and tourists, and a venue for cultural events. Its design reflects the historical evolution of the town.
