Slovenia – a leading green destination

Slovenia has become the first country in the world to be declared a Green Destination of the World, with more than 36% of its territory protected under the Natura 2000 network. Its rich biodiversity, forests, and dedicated environmental care provide a strong foundation for sustainable tourism.

Within the framework of the national program Slovenian Green Scheme of Tourism, more than 200 destinations and providers operate in accordance with strict environmental standards, create green experiences, and strengthen the sustainable orientation of tourism in Slovenia.

Slovenian Green Scheme of Tourism

The Slovenian Green Scheme of Tourism (ZSST) is a national certification programme under the Slovenia Green brand, which has been guiding Slovenian tourism on the path of sustainable development since 2014. Designed in line with international standards, the scheme provides destinations and providers with tools for assessing, improving, and promoting sustainable practices.

Participation in the program brings numerous benefits – from optimizing resource use and reducing operating costs to greater visibility and integration into the national sustainable tourism strategy. ZSST is thus a framework that gives Slovenian tourism credibility and international recognition, while also assuring guests that by choosing certified providers and destinations, they contribute to environmental protection and social responsibility.

Slovenia Green Label

Slovenia Green is the official label awarded to destinations and providers that meet strict sustainable development criteria based on the international Green Destinations standard. This standard includes 84 criteria across six categories: destination management, nature and landscape, environment and climate, culture and tradition, social climate, and the operations of tourism businesses. Depending on the results, recipients are awarded a bronze, silver, gold, or platinum label – the latter being the highest recognition, where sustainable practices are deeply embedded in all aspects of life.

The label is both a promise and a commitment to continuous improvement and responsible resource management. Today, more than 270 destinations, accommodations, restaurants, agencies, and attractions carry this label, together forming a network for exchanging best practices and joint promotion. For visitors, Slovenia Green conveys a clear message: sustainability as a value.

A green and safe choice

Slovenia Green & Safe further strengthens our commitment to sustainability with a promise of safety and responsibility. It is a communication platform of the Slovenian Tourist Board that combines high hygiene standards, responsible practices, and sustainable development in tourism. For visitors, this means that the destination Portorož & Piran is not only green but also a safe choice – a place where care for the environment, the health of guests, and the well-being of the local community always come first.

How the green story lives in Portorož and Piran

Municipality of Piran – recipient of the Golden Label

The Slovenia Green Destination Gold Label is an award for destinations that achieve high sustainability standards across all areas of operation. To obtain this label, a destination must achieve excellent scores in six categories of sustainable development, particularly in destination management and the operations of tourism providers, and must also have at least one accommodation facility certified with the Slovenia Green Accommodation label.

With this achievement, the Municipality of Piran has proven that sustainability is not just a guideline but a way of operating that permeates the entire destination – from responsible spatial management to the cooperation of tourism providers and care for guests.

Green Key on our destination

Green Key is one of the most important international environmental certificates for sustainable accommodations, ensuring high standards of responsible water and energy management, waste reduction, and the use of environmentally friendly solutions. In the destination of Portorož & Piran, we are proud to have four accommodations that carry this prestigious label: Hotel Piran, Boutique Hotel Portorose, Hotel Histrion, and Hotel Mirna.

In doing so, they demonstrate that comfort and sustainability go hand in hand – from using local ingredients in their cuisine to eco-friendly cleaning, reducing single-use plastics, and promoting soft mobility. Guests who choose to stay in these hotels thus directly contribute to protecting our coastal environment and strengthening the sustainable character of the entire destination.

Flavors of Istria in a responsible way

With their rich culinary tradition and Mediterranean setting, Portorož and Piran offer an exceptional environment for sustainable gastronomic experiences. Restaurants awarded the Slovenia Green certificate prove that it is possible to create top-quality flavors with locally and sustainably produced ingredients, combined with a responsible attitude toward the environment. Discover three culinary stories where sustainability intertwines with hospitality and creativity.

Local treasures: salt, wine, olive oil, truffles

In the destination of Portorož & Piran, sustainability is closely connected with the richness of local produce and products that carry the spirit of the environment and the traditions of Istria. The greatest symbol of sustainable heritage is Piran salt, produced in the salt pans in a 700-year-old, traditional, eco-friendly way that has shaped the identity of this area for centuries. The salt pans are not only a place of production but also an extraordinary natural environment and cultural heritage site, linking the past with a green future. An important part of the local sustainability story also includes Istrian wines, along with organically produced olive oil and truffles – the culinary treasure of the underground.

Experiences in the embrace of the sea and nature

Experience the destination of Portorož & Piran in a sustainable and active way – in tune with nature and with deep respect for the environment. From exploring the coast by e-bike or SUP, to walks through the landscape park, snorkeling in the crystal-clear sea, and discovering the secrets of the marine world with an expert – green experiences connect you with the unique nature and cultural heritage of the destination.

Central Beach Portorož – a mark of quality

Central Beach Portorož proudly carries the Slovenia Green label for beaches, which is based on the internationally recognized Blue Flag certificate. This prestigious label confirms that the beach meets strict criteria in water quality, sustainable management, environmental education, and safety. With this, the destination of Portorož & Piran demonstrates its commitment to the sustainable development of the coastal area, offering guests a clean, safe, and environmentally friendly seaside experience.

We support local initiatives

In 2024, the YouSea Institute achieved remarkable milestones in the field of marine ecosystem protection. Thanks to their dedication and the support of the community, they carried out numerous projects, including the installation of the first underwater structure Marine Oasis Piran, the implementation of the Blue School program that inspires young people to protect the sea, and the launch of the initiative “Better Than Before”, which encourages nature visitors to pick up litter.

We are proud to support the YouSea Institute in their important work of preserving natural heritage and look forward to further collaboration in their mission.

Interesting green facts

Portorož and Piran are geographically located between two salt pans – the Strunjan Salt Pans on one side and the Sečovlje Salt Pans on the other. Both landscape parks ensure the preservation of biodiversity and landscape diversity.

The Adriatic Sea is ranked among the healthiest seas in the world. Most local beaches and marinas receive the Blue Flag each year, an international ecological symbol of quality for natural swimming areas and marinas.

The most distinctive part of the Strunjan Landscape Park is the Strunjan Cliff, rising up to 80 meters high, which, together with its vegetated edge and the 200-meter strip of sea below, has been declared a nature reserve. It is also the longest stretch of unspoiled coastline along the entire 130-kilometer shoreline between Grado in Italy and Savudrija in Croatia, which together form the Gulf of Trieste. The sheer walls and the pebbly shore at the foot of the cliff are left entirely to natural processes, where the sea, rain, and wind tirelessly reshape the fragile rock layers, tracing new features upon them.

Salt makers produce Piran salt using a 700-year-old method and still harvest it by hand with traditional tools. The greatest secret behind the quality and natural white color of the salt from the Sečovlje and Strunjan salt pans lies in the clayey bottoms of the salt fields, which are covered with a thin layer of petola—a biosediment just a few millimeters thick, formed by minerals and microorganisms. This is a “living” substance, full of microorganisms and algae, which hardens after being spread and, during salt harvesting, prevents the mud from mixing with the salt, while also enriching it with minerals. The amount of oxygen produced by petola on the same surface area corresponds to that produced by a tropical rainforest 30 to 40 meters high, enriching our air. This unique microclimate enhances the air, making it the richest in antioxidants in all of Europe!

Fleur de sel forms on the surface of the brine from salt crystals that create a characteristic downward-pointing pyramid structure in the form of a thin, delicate crust. Fleur de sel can crystallize throughout the entire salt crystallization area, but the highest quality forms in brine with higher concentration. Its color ranges from white to slightly pink.

The richness of local natural healing resources in Portorož and Piran was already used by the Benedictines in the 13th century. Even at that time, Portorož was known as a health resort, where the monks of the St. Lawrence Monastery treated with seawater and brine. The healing effects for illnesses such as rheumatism, dropsy, scrofula, obesity, and wounds were well known both nearby and further afield. Portorož was officially declared a health resort by state law of the Austro-Hungarian Ministry of the Interior on July 25, 1897.

The Piran hinterland is a true paradise for olive growing. Many indigenous olive varieties grow here, such as Piran komuna or rosulja, Piran žižula, Piran zmartel or mortino, Piran štorta, Piran mata, Piran črnica, and Piran buga. These magnificent beauties can also be admired in the Forma Viva park near Portorož. Thanks to the specific climatic conditions of this area, Istrian olive oil is renowned for its distinctive flavor even beyond the borders.

The double-row avenue of 110 pine trees, part of the Strunjan Landscape Park, is the longest and best-preserved in Slovenia. In 2004, it was protected and declared a natural monument.
