The Fonda Family: passion and dedication to the sea

Meet the family dedicated to raising the best fish in the world. During the boat ride through the Fonda Marine Garden, listen to their passionate story about the authentic Piran sea bass Fonda, and see for yourself the genuine love for the sea — a love they don’t just speak of, but truly live. The Fonda family has centuries-old roots in the Piran area, with their existence intertwined with the sea and land through generations.
Founder Ugo Fonda was a graduate biologist and an internationally recognized expert in underwater biology.
He passed on his love for the sea to his children, Lean and Irena, and together they founded the family business.
Dr. Irena Fonda, a molecular biologist and the face of Fonda Fish Farm, strives to share her love and mission for the sea with visitors by constantly raising awareness about the importance of marine biodiversity conservation.
She carries out this mission through daily work and by engaging the public via the You(r)Sea Institute, where she focuses on environmental protection, especially reducing pollution and ensuring a healthy habitat for marine flora and fauna.
Lean Fonda, a biologist and professional diver, continues the family tradition of diving and marine biology.
Passion and love for the sea guide the family in their work and the development of a business that proudly offers the world’s finest sea bass.
Unforgettable experience: discover the secrets of sustainable fish farming at Fonda Fish Farm

Join us for an unforgettable adventure and discover why, at the Fonda marine fish farm, they do everything “wrong” from an economic point of view:
- the fish stay in the water too long,
- they are fed with the most expensive food,
- only the highest-quality fish fry are raised,
- all work is done by hand, without the use of chemicals, and
- their nets contain ten times fewer fish per volume than usual.
This is the price they pay out of passion for raising the best farmed sea bass in the world, using sustainable and nature-friendly methods.
Your experience begins with meeting the guide at the port in Seča, where you’ll be warmly welcomed and given a short presentation about the land-based fish farming process.
Then, you’ll board a vessel, or — if you prefer — you can paddle to the fish farm by kayak or SUP.
While sailing to the Fonda Fish Garden, the guide will introduce you to the features of the Sečovlje Salina Nature Park and the Portorož fishing reserve. Upon arrival at the marine garden, you’ll tour the fish farm and see a fish feeding demonstration. On the way back, you’ll observe the mussel cultivation area.
Your journey concludes under the pine trees with a tasting of the exceptional Piran sea bass Fonda, seasoned with fleur de sel and a drop of Istrian olive oil, accompanied by a glass of Malvasia wine.
Join us for this unique experience and discover the secrets of fish farming at Fonda, where quality and love for nature go far beyond economic logic.
