Award-winning marine adventure on the Slovenian coast
We invite you to a unique and award-winning snorkeling – seawatching experience along the precious seagrass meadows of the Slovenian coast. This is an educational, relaxing, and sensory-rich adventure that combines nature exploration, environmental protection, and the flavors of Istrian tradition.
The experience is suitable for individuals, couples, families, and all nature lovers – with no age limit or prior experience required.
Discovering seagrass meadows through seawatching
Seawatching is a form of snorkeling where you observe the underwater world from the surface using only a mask and snorkel, without diving deep. This simple yet powerful method allows you to peacefully observe marine life while relaxing in direct contact with nature. Even if you have no snorkeling experience, our experienced guides will teach you the basics so you can enjoy the experience safely and confidently.
While floating above underwater green oases, you’ll discover a rich variety of marine life: from tiny anemones, crabs, and mollusks to many species of fish, seahorses, and even sea turtles and dolphins – if we’re lucky. These seagrass meadows are vital habitats for marine organisms, offering shelter, food, and breeding grounds for various species.
A particularly breathtaking sight is the oxygen bubbles that form on the leaves of the seagrass on sunny days and glisten as they rise to the surface.
The ecological importance of seagrass meadows and your role in their protection
Seagrass meadows – especially Posidonia oceanica – are considered the “lungs of the sea”, producing over 14 liters of oxygen per square meter each day. They act as carbon sinks, stabilize the seabed, clean the water, and support life for countless marine species. In Slovenia, Posidonia grows in only one location – near Žusterna, making these meadows extremely valuable ecologically.
Equally fascinating are the lush Cymodocea nodosa meadows, which can be observed near Cape Seča, close to Portorož.
During the experience, under the expert guidance of marine biologists and conservationists, you will learn about the functioning of marine ecosystems and the threats these habitats face due to human impact.
That’s why we encourage participants to practice responsible snorkeling:
- Do not touch organisms or feed animals
- Do not damage seagrass
- If you see litter, pick it up – if it’s safe
- Always follow the guide’s instructions
By following these simple rules, you become part of the solution – not the problem.
