The Town of Salt Workers: Winter in Piran, Summer in Sečovlje
Alongside the grand buildings of wealthy merchants and sailors, the true medieval Piran was shaped by the modest homes of salt worker families. On April 23rd, St. George’s Day, salt workers moved with their families to the salt pans, first mentioned in 804 AD. Until the end of October, they lived in simple saltworkers’ houses, designed for basic living, storing tools, and storing the harvested salt.
Piran salt, still produced today using a traditional method over 700 years old, was highly valued for its exceptional quality. The prosperity from salt trade fueled the economic and cultural growth of the town. The Museum of Salt Making in the Sečovlje Salina Nature Park showcases historic salt production techniques and the way of life of salt worker families.
