A Bay of Rich History
The Portorož Bay, where the Histri people were already harvesting salt in ancient times, was part of the Roman province of Histria before later coming under the rule of the Venetian Republic, which protected it from pirates.
After the fall of Venice, the area came under Austrian rule, and by the 19th century, it had become a renowned spa destination for Europe’s elite. The therapeutic saltwater baths and salt mud treatments, which had been recommended by Benedictine monks as early as the 13th century, gained widespread popularity.
